Looks like we’re in the beginning of the warm season now. I’m already getting a bunch of phone calls from my friends asking me the same thing. they’re turning on the air conditioning and the air conditioning is not turning on. they wanna know how to fix it and if like my friend you’re wondering how to fix air conditioning troubleshooting then that really sucks. the good news is however I am here to help you save a lot of money and a lot of headache. alright kiddo so there are no tools required for the steps that I’m about to run you through but I do recommend that you get these two tools right here. the first is a Milwaukee 11 and 1 multi screwdriver. I don’t know why they call it the 11 in 1 screwdriver because it doesn’t have 11 screwdrivers but it does have 9,. this thing is one of my favorite tools of all time, this is pretty much all I need for 90 percent of the service calls I do, I just grab this throw it right in my pocket and I have 11 screwdrivers, and the second tool because most of the time we need like to see is the clip light, this has a lot of advantages over the regular flashlight and that and has a really slim form factor and it’s super bright where you can clip in anywhere and as a magnetic back you can put it on the furnace on a unit that you’re working on. there’s a couple things that air conditioning requires to operate, 1 is air flow, 2 is compressor operation, the compressor has to operate in order to complete the refrigeration cycle and remove the heat from the coil that’s inside the house, first thing that we’re going to check is the filter, and this filter is dirty like this, but sometimes they get so clogged that there’s no airflow at all almost no airflow it all, especially after the winter time because the heating doesn’t require as much airflow and the cooling does, that might be the problem if there’s not enough airflow, poor air flow common causes, dirty air filter or a very dirty a coil, 95% of the service calls for air conditioning , are because of the filter, if the filter was your problem congratulations, you just saved yourself a ton of money, if it wasn’t then watch on, what we’re trying to do is were trying to determine what event is missing from the sequence of operation, first thing we have to do and I know this is gonna sound kinda obvious, is go to a thermostat and make sure that the fan is on auto, system is on on, and the set point is below the room temperature, and depending on the thermostat model you’ll hear a click and you’ll see a visual indicator, that was a cool on, have you think the thermostat is bad because you don’t hear a click, or don’t see the indicator turn on then you can bypass the thermostat by using a paperclip between the Y terminal and the R terminal, now that the thermostat is on or jump, when we come back here by the furnace, we should hear the furnace making noise rumbling and that’s telling us the furnace is on and we should hear some hissing noise coming from this evaporator coil, and the furnace is rumbling and there’s air blowing from the van that means the blower in the furnace is working, if there’s no air from your vents and there’s no noise at the furnace here then the first thing you should check is this disconnect switch right here and a lot of times are not in the open like this there like in closets and inconspicuous places and sometimes people bump them by accident and they’re in the off position and that’s not it the second thing you should check is your circuit breaker, we got this far which means that the filter is clean our thermostat is working and our blower is on next thing you want to check are these two lines right here going into the evaporator coil, this is the liquid line and this is the suction line this is where the temperature of our lines become very important normal operation is when the suction line is about 45 degrees in the liquid line is warm to the touch or warmer but not hot, is this liquid line here is hot or burning hot, cause sometimes they’re really hot then that’s where you wanna come outside and take a look at the condenser, first thing you want to check is to make sure this fan right here is running and if its not running a lot of times it just needs a little push with a stick or something, just to get it going as you can see here in this video, because especially if this is the first time you’re turning on your Air conditioning this season a lot of times they ge seized because they haven’t been turned on all winter.
If the fan is working then the next thing you wanna do is disconnect the power war or turn the thermostat off to get the condenser to shut off, then you want to clean the condenser coil, if you come back to the coil and this liquid line here is hissing or the suction line is freezing then more than likely in the unit is low on refrigerant, but that means that your compressor is working, if the unit is low on refrigerant now is the time to call a technician but at least you know that is the problem, if these two lines here are room temperature and there is no hissing noise then more than likely the condenser is off after checking those lines you come outside and the condensers off then what you need to do is you need to first check this disconnect right and a lot of times if you have some landscapers doing some work they don’t want all the debris to get sucked into the condenser coil so they’ll pull this little disconnect out, and put it in the off position, so a lot of times they will leave and they will forget , now it’s after checking the disconnect and checking the breaker, which is usually in your basement your circuit breaker box the condenser still isn’t on then more than likely it’s a wiring issue between the thermostat wiring and the condenser or a wiring issue between this disconnect and your breaker box just those few things I went over with you cover the cause of failure for about 75 percent of all the air conditioning service calls I’ve ever done.
I hope I help you fix your air conditioning and if I helped you fix your air conditioning , and if I hope you fix your air conditioning please help me and subscribe below and as always if you have any additional questions or comments please post them below, until next time I’m Matt Mikka and enjoy the warm weather.
